The Fund began operations in the summer of 2005 following the completion of a study by OSI gauging conservation threats and opportunities in the region, Western Massachusetts: Assessing the Conservation Opportunity. The study resulted in the creation of a $2 million dollar low-cost loan fund from a private charitable foundation. The fund, which grew to $4 million in September 2006, aims to further conservation through the protection of working farms, forests and biologically important landscapes in western Massachusetts.
