From fossils to revolutions to farmlands, the Capital District surrounding Albany, New York is a land worth exploring.  On the northern edge of the Hudson River Valley, surrounding New York State’s capital city of Albany, the Capital District is a region steeped in layers of history and geography.



Papscanee Island

With rich soil and abundant water, Papscanee Island has long been home to farmers, beginning with the Mohican (Mahikan) Indians and then Dutch settlers.

Ten miles west of Albany, rugged limestone cliffs rise up in a dramatic north-south undulating ridgeline, known as the Helderberg Escarpment.
