Stonewall Preserve

In 2005, OSI acquired an agricultural easement on 300 acres of farmland at Stonewall Preserve belonging to the Center for Discovery, a residential, rehabilitation and educational facility for children and adults with disabilities located in Harris, NY in Sullivan County.

Over 100 acres of open land sits high in the landscape and the property includes eleven forest types, wetlands, and acres of June-blossoming rhododendron across the northern portion of the territory. One of the most noteworthy features, though, is the miles of stonewalls built by past generations farmers.

Stonewall Preserve, formerly called the Pennroyl Farm, was a dairy operation owned by the Mitteer family for six generations, dating back to a land grant from General Lafayette after the Revolutionary War.

By acquiring an agricultural easement, ensuring that the land will be available for farming and not be developed, OSI has helped the Center for Discovery's ability to expand their programs in a sustainable, positive way that benefits the residents and surrounding countryside.

The Center for Discovery includes Stonewall Preserve, a CSA farm, the Tutto Benne organic cattle farm, (home to one of the largest herds of full-blooded Chianina cows in the U.S.,) an equine therapy center, residential and educational facilities for all of its residents and medical facilities.
