New York, NY — September 25, 2014 — As New Yorkers commemorate Climate Week 2014, six of New York State’s leading  conservation groups today joined together to applaud Governor Andrew Cuomo’s release of his draft statewide Open Space Conservation Plan. Once finalized, the plan will guide New York State’s open space and farmland protection investments through the state Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and other sources of public and private funding.

“Once again showing New York’s leadership in addressing climate change and building resiliency, Governor Cuomo’s Open Space Conservation Plan has updated the state’s conservation framework for the needs of our time.  The plan lays the path for New York State and its private partners to achieve smart, high impact conservation results and address our greatest environmental challenge.

The plan rightly underscores the importance of protecting our natural resources and makes the direct connection that conservation is key to reducing disaster risk to our communities and protecting our water sources and clean air. We also applaud the administration’s emphasis on the important role land conservation plays is promoting outdoor recreation, working farms, habitat protection and climate change mitigation.

This plan warrants full attention and review and we look forward to working with the Governor Cuomo and his administration in support the adoption and implementation of this comprehensive land conservation blueprint.”
