FINDING A RECIPE FOR CLEAN WATER
The science is clear: protecting forests makes for clean water. Still, additional research is needed as the conservation community seeks a better understanding of how the extent, type, and location of protected forests impact water quality. OSI is conducting a four-year study to measure the connection between land protection and clean water that will help guide its work in protecting the Delaware River watershed.

DELAWARE WATERSHED PROJECT SUCCESSES
Protecting forested lands bordering headwater streams in the Delaware River basin is critically important for maintaining the water quality downstream. These five recent land conservation projects, which protected 4,200 acres with almost $1.4 million in grants from OSI’s Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund, protect drinking water and add to recreation.

OSI plan WILL enhance New Jersey Reservoir 
After two years of planning, a blueprint developed by OSI to enhance and safeguard the Boonton Reservoir in Morris County, NJ, was formally approved by the Jersey City Council. The plan will maintain and even enhance the quality of the reservoir’s water, while creating an approximately seven-mile loop trail for walkers and nature lovers.

Running along the Wallkill River and active farm fields in New Paltz, NY, OSI's newly opened River-to-Ridge trail has quickly become a popular community destination. As caretaker and steward of this trail, OSI is taking several steps to sustainably manage the surrounding property; finding a balance between ecological, agricultural, and recreational uses and challenges.

GRANTS IMPROVE WATER QUALITY PLANNING
Two recent OSI Catalyst grants are helping towns and counties integrate water quality information into their planning efforts. These plans will help set conservation priorities. New Jersey Future is working to enroll towns in a federal program that reduces flood insurance costs; while the Broadhead Watershed Association has developed a tool to help incorporate water quality data in the Pocanos' land protection plans.

PROTECTING SEBAGO'S WATERSHED FORESTS
The 282,000-acre Sebago Lake watershed provides exceptionally clean drinking water to one of every six Maine residents. But with only 10 percent of Sebago's watershed conserved, this is among the region's most vulnerable water supplies.

LAND DEAL PROTECTS SOUTH CAROLINA RIVER 
OSI joined with the South Carolina Ports Authority and Pee Dee Land Trust on a project aimed at improving the water quality of the Little Pee Dee River. Protecting 78 acres near the source of the river will also reduce the risk of flooding downstream.
