Saving Cherry Valley Film
FILM FESTIVAL HONORS WATER FILM
A short film produced by OSI with the support of the William Penn Foundation is being featured this month in the Pennsylvania Resources Council’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival. The 2019 film, Saving Cherry Valley, celebrates the addition of more than 4,300 acres to the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge, protecting land for bog turtles and bird habitat, the Appalachian Trail, and drinking water within the Delaware River Watershed.

Two Pennsylvania land conservation projects achieved with support from OSI’s Delaware River Watershed Protection Fund illustrate the important role land conservation plays in maintaining water quality. The newly protected 400 acres include both and agricultural and forested properties.

Clean Water and Healthy Forests
A largescale Adirondack conservation project achieved by OSI this summer not only secures clean water for the nearby City of Amsterdam, but also promotes sustainable timber practices within the region and the expansion of recreational opportunities. As part of this series of transactions, three properties totaling more than 9,300 acres of privately-owned forested land in the Adirondacks are now permanently protected.

LAND PROTECTION TO FIGHT FLOODING
Through its work on the Delaware River Watershed Initiative, OSI is addressing climate change and flooding through its Watershed Catalyst Program. The program supports regional planning that harnesses watershed science, with the goal of enhancing one of the most effective defenses against flooding: targeted land conservation.

Federal Funds Boost Clean Water ProjectS
Two OSI initiatives to accelerate forest conservation for clean water have earned federal grants totaling $10 million. The Regional Conservation Partnership Program grants were awarded to support forest protection at Sebago Lake in Maine, and in the Upper Delaware River Watershed of Pennsylvania and New York.

"Trees for Tribs" at OSI RiVER-TO-RIDGE Trail
Improving water quality at the Wallkill River was the goal as more than 30 volunteers participated in a socially distanced native tree planting at OSI’s River-to-Ridge Trail in New Paltz, New York. The tree planting project at the trail, which runs alongside the river, will not only help to filter runoff, but it also serves to educate trail-users on the important role trees and other vegetation play in providing clean water.

PROTECTING SOUTH CAROLINA’S EDISTO RIVER
Building on its work in South Carolina, OSI and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR) have achieved another conservation success along the Edisto River. Protected by OSI in 2019, the land’s transfer to SC DNR will continue to safeguard drinking water downriver for the Charleston metropolitan area, while creating a connector for additional state lands nearby.
